Every child should have a pet. It’s the first sense of life, of loss, of care and responsibility. Kids don’t recognize love and being loved till much later in terms of people, because they were born into that. But having a pet teaches them things. Something living belongs to the child from its very beginning to its end. It’s a good experience. Cat, dog, fish, bird, goat—whichever: Every child should have a pet.
(My dad had an aquarium of fish, a big cage of budgerigars, and a green parrot that only knew how to say his own name and mine, but the first pets that were mine were six little chicks dyed different colors.
The one that remained the longest until it suffered a leg injury was one that looked like the pink one pictured above)
